The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Maiduguri has intercepted a truck loaded with about 2,300kilogrammes of substances suspected to be indian hemps put at a conservative market value of N80 million .
The truck, according to the law enforcement agency, was abandoned by suspected traffickers at Bulumkutu area of Maiduguri when it was discovered that the men of the NDLEA was on its trail.
Borno State Commander of the agency, Dr. Wale Ige said his men on receiving a tip from the members of the public went on the trail of the vehicle, an Iveco sealed truck with Lagos registration number XQ 922 LND, which was making a journey to one of the border posts with the intention of trafficking the consignment through Libya en-route Europe.
The truck which was discovered to have taken its consignment from one of the numerous farms in Edo state had its loading compartment specially designed by probably local automobile body builders to conceal the drugs that was compressed for easy transportation.
The drugs were compressed in about 3,300 blocks of an average weight of 700 grams and loaded in 225 sacks of 25 blocks.
Ige who conducted journalists round the truck which was stationed at the Maiduguri office of the NDLEA, said the truck was trailed from Edo State where it was loaded till it arrived Maiduguri on the morning of Thursday, 17th January, 2008.
He however disclosed that the agency was still on the trail of the owner of the consignment, asking for the assistance of the members of the public to apprehend him as he was on the run.
