The Misdemeanor Court of First Instance Sunday sentenced a former Kuwaiti police officer, identified only as H. Ali, to three months in jail and referred the case to the concerned Civil Court after finding him guilty of cheating a Canadian man of Iranian origin and his family to the tune of KD 1,200,000 with the promise of getting them the Kuwaiti citizenship and ensuring huge profits from illusive projects.
During a previous session, defense attorney Abbas Ali Abbas had requested the court to give the man maximum penalty. He had also requested the court to order the man to pay his client KD 5,001 in temporary compensation.
In his lawsuit, the plaintiff said the suspect promised to get Kuwaiti citizenship for him and his family of six. The suspect also told him that he had to pay KD 640,000 in advance saying he had good relations with a member of the ruling family.
The suspect also told the victim that he has to pay KD 600,000 to the Sheikh and KD 40,000 needed to complete the procedures of getting the citizenship. He also showed the victim some documents to prove his relationship to the Sheikh.
The suspect also managed to convince the victim to buy a plot of land said to have been approved by the concerned authorities to construct a hospital. He also convinced the victim this project would bring him a lot of money.
When the victim asked for the citizenship papers and documents showing he purchase of the plot of land, he received nothing. He discovered he had been cheated and filed a case against the man.
